The Galeria de Pozos in the Hotel Casa Montana is
a showcase for recent art and photography. Currently the photographs
of Jack Spencer as available for viewing.
Spencer was born in Kosciusko, Mississippi and lived
most of his life in the South.
Jack Spencer
is author of the highly acclaimed and beautiful book, Native
Soil (Louisiana State University Press: 1999), a visual journey
of his deep South. Spencer has spent much of his life in the Southand
in this book he reveals his unparalleled gift for capturing the
beauty and fecundity of his native land. His black and white images
display a stunning artistry, and intimate the experience, life
and history under each photograph’s surface.
Describing his own work as akin
to short stories, his images capture an implied narrative and
mood that is pushed along by his printing process. Shooting in
medium format, he keeps detailed notes and makes elaborate masks,
carefully dodging and burning specific areas of the prints. He
then brown-tones and bathes the prints in a selenium wash. Spencer
is highly skilled in producing elegantly executed and consistent
editions of handcrafted photographs, and has earned broad recognition
for his work.
