THE MINES

During its heyday, Pozos had 306 mines operated by some 500 businesses. It is estimated that more than 1,200,000 tons of ore were extracted since the arrival of the Spanairds (circa 1576 in Pozos) until the last mine closed in 1926.

Average yields per ton of ore were 47.5 ounces of Silver and less than a third of an ounce of Gold. Some veins yielded as much as 88 ounces of Silver and 1.5 ounces of Gold per ton of ore.

The Mexican Government has estimated that some 4,000,000 ounces of Silver and 300,000 ounces of Gold in total were extracted during the period mentioned above. As noted below, there are at least 24 addtional minerals that were mined.

They are in various state of disrepair and danger. Access varies, too. Some are readily accessible. others require permission to enter. The best way to experience them firsthand is with a guide, both to explain what you see but also for safety. All of the mine sites are unprotected - literally abandoned - and as a result are extremely dangerous. There are open mine shafts and other areas requiring great personal caution.
